1. Continue to work on your essays that are due on Wednesday.

2. I will be out on Thursday for a meeting. That will be a watch a movie and practice listening skills day.

3. Sometime today try and log on to the moddle page. Whatever we use will be uploaded there to make it easier for us in case of absences.

1. Writing a synthesis essay.
  • Synthesis is to use more than one source of information to help form an opinion and support that opinion.
  • Qualify---agree with points on both sides...being able to see how both can have valid points.
2. Look for sources that you can use to prove your thesis.

3. Make sure to use good sites and not Wikipedia.

4. Copy and past the information you are finding into a Word document, copy and paste the web address you find the information and put today's date.

  • Figures of Speech--analyze figurative language and other devices
  • Tone and Theme--discuss how all devices reveal tone and theme
3. If this is not completed in class it becomes HOMEWORK.

4. We will be skipping act 1.11 and moving on to 1.12.

  • One is the creation of a survey and the other is an essay.

Purpose--Seciont 1.10 deals with how money and the American Dream intermingle. Do you need money to achieve the American Dream? How important is money in America?

1. Turn in--Money monologue. You wrote a paragraph as if you were money.

2. Read excerpt from "A Raisin in the Sun." After you read the excerpt go back and note your ideas of conflicting ideas toward the role of money in this family and what it means to each of the main characters. What lines show their opinion?

3. OBSERVATION PACKET:
  • Listen as i read some sentences and identify the pictures by the description that you hear.
  • Look at the pictures on pg. 79 and identify who/what/when/where in the picture. Fo each one Write a sentence using the information you found.
  • Pg. 80, you will look for a picture or use the picture that i post up and write who/what/when/where. When you identify all of that you will write an observational paragraph about the picture.

2. You were to focus on 3 questions. You will now have 5 minutes to look for and underline the information that shows:
  • What the dream was?
  • Where the dream is threatened?
  • How the dream comes into existence?

3. We are going to look at Certain Features in this essay to analyze writing in non-fiction. Your table may be assigned to Symbols, Imagery/Sensory Details, Figurative Language, and Tone and Theme.
4. QUICKWRITE: Think of a person that you have seen/heard about. Identify what that person's dream was and where the dream was threatened or blocked and how that dream came true.

  • Home group: a group that you usually sit by. You return to your group and present what you learned in your expert group. This is a way to develop listening skills as well as presenting information.

1. Complete Act 1.7--Read final poem by e.e. cummings. The whole point of this activity is to note the Speaker's attitude/tone toward the subject.

  • Tone: The author's attitude toward his or her subject. For example. a tone can be sarcastic, optimistic or angry.

2. You will write your own 10-15 line poem describing your attitude towards America. This will be done as homework.

3. Activity 1.8--This is about different parts of the American Dream. You will be assigned to a specific part of the text. After you read and take notes of your section you will get into a group of students who read the same section as you.

  2. W/W + A1 + WHEN.
  • Example: Because the students wanted to learn, they studied a lot. They often were still doing homework while other students were watching television.
3. Work on Biographical Trading Cards, which are due WEDNESDAY. There will be a presentation of the cards on WEDNESDAY.

4. When you are done with the two poems, look at pg. 34 for your writing prompt:
Choose which speaker and tone in the previous poems and song most closely resembles your attitude toward America and discuss why. Describe how personal experiences align you with this attitude and any small differences in your viewpoint.
