1. Writing a synthesis essay.

• Synthesis is to use more than one source of information to help form an opinion and support that opinion.
• Qualify---agree with points on both sides...being able to see how both can have valid points.

2. Look for sources that you can use to prove your thesis.

3. Read the remaining selections in Unit 1. Take notes of what you read and if they can or cannot support the writing prompt.

• p. 91--helps you to decide if you are going to support one side or the other.
• p. 77--explains the structure of an argumentative essay.
• p. 83--helps you to think of the American Dream.

4. Overall, you do not have to look for other sources. You can use the readings that we have seen in class. You can also use songs that you know of that can help you.

WRITING PROMPT:

Synthesize at least 3-5 sources and your own observations to defend, challenge, or qualify the statement that America still provides access to the American Dream, to the "tired, the poor, and the huddled masses." You need at least 3-5 sources to argue your position. Use the sources and your own observations generalized to support your positon.
